On Tuesday, 20-year-old Michael Brandon Hill entered the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia, with the intention to kill as many people as possible.
No one was harmed, thanks to the amazing Antoinette Tuff, a bookkeeper at the elementary school. Hill has had a history of mental illness, and combined with the stress of his mother dying earlier this year and his Medicaid expiring, he hasn’t been in a stable mindset for some time. Hill snuck in, dressed in black, with an AK-47 and roughly 500 rounds of ammunition. He confronted Tuff, who had stepped in for a secretary, and laid out his plan to her.
Hill took Tuff to the school PA system, where he announced to the school that he, ‘wasn’t playing around,’ and urged he to call the local new-station to say, ‘he was gonna end his life and take all the cops and everybody with him.’ Tuff managed to keep him inside for the most part, and began to talk him down.
Details are still a bit fuzzy as to the order of how things went down, but Hill did shoot off a few rounds on the roof and exchanged fire with the police. After speaking with Hill about her devastating divorce and how she bounced back, Hill relinquished all his belongings, apologize to the students and faculty, and turn himself in. Even if she won’t admit it, Tuff is a hero!
