In case you missed it, August 22nd was Earth Overshoot Day, so it’s time to celebrate! Just kidding, this is terrible news.
Every year, Earth Overshoot Day is a day in which the planet begins to use more that it can regenerate in a year. So it isn’t so much of a celebration as it is a wake up call/warning/oh sh*t moment.
Last year, Earth Overshoot Day was August 20th, and was September 27th in 2011. The significant jump is due some new calculations, but it is still not a good sign.
GFN (Global Footprint Network) put together this fancy infograph to show just how many resources a specific nation uses compared to its size.
Basically this means that the current population of Earth needs the resources of 1.5 Earths, and by 2050 we will need the resources of 2 Earths.
Is there a way curb over consumption on Earth?
