Gunman Aaron Alexis killed at least 12 people during a shooting rampage at the Naval Sea Systems Command on the grounds of the Navy Yard this morning.
The 34 year-old gunman was found dead on the scene with three weapons: an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and a semiautomatic pistol. The FBI is currently leading the investigation into Alexis’ motive, which is currently unknown.
The Navy stated shots began firing at 8:20 am at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, where roughly 3,000 people are employed. President Obama stated prior to an event:
We’re confronting yet another mass shooting. We will do everything in our power to make sure whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.
Regarding the victims, the President went on to say:
They know the dangers of serving abroad, today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home. We send our thoughts and prayers to all at the Navy Yard who’ve been touched by this tragedy.
Police and federal agents from multiple law enforcement agencies arrived on the scene, closing several streets in the area.
In the meantime, a Russian politician took no time use the tragedy as a talking point, writing on his twitter:
A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington - a lone gunman and 7 corpses. Nobody’s even surprised anymore. A clear confirmation of American exceptionalism.
The U.S. Embassy in Russia responded:
“What’s exceptionalism got to do with it? Why use a tragedy to score political points?”
The investigation is still ongoing, our hearts go out to the victims and their families
